Tentative Conference Agenda

The annual WLP Conference is the flagship event of the WLP initiative. Participants discuss leadership, broaden their intellectual horizons, and learn about new endeavors and innovations at Virginia Tech.

2011 was the ninth year of the conference, which has been held at the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Va.; the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.; the Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke, Va.; and the Inn at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Over the past nine years, the conference has featured:

  • Sessions with dozens of Virginia Tech faculty from all over campus.
  • Classes on wine tasting, cooking, and floral arranging.
  • Book discussions with guest authors Sharyn McCrumb, Sybil Baker, Mary Foley, Christine Mason Miller, Emilie Richards, and Melinda Emerson.
  • Sessions on a wide variety of topics including wealth management, investing and personal finance; protecting yourself from identity theft; how to make environmentally friendly choices in your everyday life; public health; long-term care; wildlife in Africa and Belize; and DNA gel electrophoresis.
  • Tours of Greensboro, Smithfield Plantation, the Hahn Horticulture Garden, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute, and the Skelton 4-H Center at Smith Mountain Lake.
  • Golf, tennis, swimming, yoga, nature walks, and hikes.
  • Keynote speeches from Virginia Tech alumnae like Dateline NBC host Hoda Kotb and Lt.Col. Denise Shuster Greenfield, USMC, the first female corps of cadets regimental commander.
